Del D asked:

why not buy a netbook and use that as a small personal computer and along with skype it can be used as a cellphone and with MSN messenger as an instant messenger? can you hook into a 3G/3GS network with a netbook?
alternatively, why not do the same thing with an Apple iTouch?

You should be able to connect a netbook with a mobile broadband dongle, either pay monthly or pay as you go. However check the conditions very carefully – the mobile networks are quite strict about using Skype via mobile broadband for obvious reasons. This would apply to the iTouch too. It may well work out more expensive going this route than getting a mobile phone.
